Earthquake measuring 5.5 degrees hit western Iran

An earthquake of moderate intensity small-town western Iran near the border with Iraq, said the agency "Mehr" semi-official Iranian news agency that an earthquake measuring 5.5 jolted a sparsely populated area near the town of Murmuy on Thursday, about the town about 480 kilometers southwest of Tehran.

The agency said that people rushed from their homes for fear of the earthquake, but there were no reports of casualties, and this region has seen dozens of medium-strength earthquakes over the past few weeks.

It is noteworthy that Iran sits on some of the most active seismic fault lines and is prone to frequent earthquakes and in 2003, killed about twenty-six thousand people when the DC earthquake measuring 6.6 on the historic city of Bam in the southeast of the country.
