A new U.S. maneuver to resume peace talks with Taliban

The Obama administration is considering new maneuver for the resumption of peace talks with the Taliban in Afghanistan, through the transfer of a number of Taliban prisoners from the detention center at Guantanamo to a prison in Afghanistan.


He said U.S. and Afghan officials said some Taliban fighters who were detained during the first days of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, and who were sent later to Guantanamo, will be transferred to a detention center near Bagram Air Base, the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan.


The officials spoke about the proposal on condition of anonymity because he is still under discussion.


They said that the idea is to enhance the credibility of the American-backed Afghan government, as he tries to President Hamid Karzai and U.S. officials re the Taliban back to the negotiating table after it stopped in March.
